Summary

Completing his treatment of the Great Litany, Panagopoulos considers its petitions for seafarers, travelers, the sick, the weary, captives, and all who face tribulation, danger, or necessity. The congregation must inwardly join each petition rather than attend only to the deacon’s voice. Illness may become an occasion of providential correction, while captivity includes both bodily confinement and spiritual bondage. “Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us by Thy grace” teaches that every benefit is gift, not entitlement; Romans presents Christ as the graft through whom fallen humanity bears good fruit. The concluding commemoration proclaims Mary as Theotokos and Ever-Virgin, drawing on Gregory the Theologian, Ezekiel’s closed gate, and the Red Sea. Christ alone saves, while the Theotokos and Saints intercede according to James’s teaching on righteous prayer.

For if we said that the phrase means “for those sailing in good weather,” since that is where you placed the emphasis, then we would be saying that we should pray for those who have fair weather. No; we should pray for those who have bad weather, not fair weather. So that cannot be the meaning.

Those who have fair weather do not need prayer and help; those who have bad weather do. Therefore, the phrase “for those who sail well” means “for those who are not sailing under evil conditions.” That is how it should be understood. Here, then, the Church prays for those at sea.

Someone who has a loved one traveling at sea will certainly be able to feel this, understand it, and participate attentively in this prayer of the Church. He looks outside and sees a snowstorm or a whirlwind, and he says, “What must be happening now to my loved one, who has gone out to earn his bread, struggling against the sea and these forces of nature?” Then he will truly understand how attentively he must stand in Church and pray, so that this supplication for those at sea may be heard.

For those traveling by land. There are also people journeying overland, who again often struggle against the forces of nature, sometimes facing dangers as though fighting wild beasts and finding themselves in difficult circumstances. The Church prays that the grace of the Holy Spirit may help them and deliver them from danger.

For the sick—that is, those who are ill—and for the weary—that is, those exhausted by sickness or by other temptations. The Church brings all of them before God during divine worship and pleads on their behalf.

And each person should participate inwardly in these petitions, whether they are proclaimed by the priest or by the deacon. The truth is that we let them pass us by without giving them any thought, as we have said.

The deacon proclaims them, and if he happens to have a beautiful voice, we pay more attention to the beauty of his voice than to the meaning of the words. But if this necessary petition is to receive an answer, we must participate and understand what he is saying. Our nous—the spiritual intellect—must immediately turn to what the Church, through this prayer, is asking God to bring about.

So he says, “For those at sea”—and we have explained which seafarers are meant—and “for those traveling by land,” for people may find themselves journeying in many different ways. Then he speaks of the sick: so many people are ill, and often they have no one even to speak to them about what their illness means.

Often this may lead them into disobedience, because they do not know how to grasp the meaning of the illness or understand what may come from an illness for which we may not be at fault. Yet most of the time we ourselves are at fault. For if our trials were counted, out of a hundred—

One illness may be from God; the other ninety-nine are made by our own hands. The sick person therefore needs someone to go to his bedside, or at least a prayer to reach him by an indirect path, to console him and tell him that he is not alone and has not been abandoned by divine providence.

He must be told that God cares for him—and perhaps cares for him even more now that He has called him to undergo this trial. Yet we have been given a specific command, accompanied by a warning: “I was sick, and you did not come to Me.”

If the sick are not our relatives, and if there is no concern that our visit might be misunderstood, we still do not go to meet them. We do not visit them or tell them that God exists, that medicine exists, and that healing exists—provided there is a reason for them to be healed.

For often there is no reason for us to be healed, while there is a reason for us not to be healed. Many times, remaining unhealed brings greater spiritual benefit than being healed. The faithful are therefore called to pray for these people, whether or not they themselves have someone who is sick.

A person understands the seriousness of these words most clearly when someone close to him is ill. If his young son is slipping away, or his husband, wife, companion, or another relative, then his heart melts all the more. He too is wholly consumed, becoming like a burnt offering in the intensity of his attention.

When we are outside the frying pan, we are not so concerned. We have to be inside it before we understand the value of these words, which, as I have said, we pass over so quickly because we do not pay attention and do not want to participate.

Yet we have been given the Amen to say: “Yes, for those at sea; yes, for those traveling by land—Amen. For those in pain, those afflicted, and those who are weary—Amen. Yes, yes.” But we do not say it. Often we do not even hear the priest or the chanter saying it on our behalf.

So he says, “For the sick.” And “for the weary” refers to those who have been exhausted by various circumstances, or even worn down by illness. Their morale has been shattered, their nerves are frayed, and they have generally lost their sense of direction.

They need a few words of comfort; they need material assistance; they need something—someone to stand beside them—so that they may find the strength to stand again. This is a duty entrusted to us, who are called the faithful, who are called Christians, the Church militant—who are called the Church.

There have been captives, and there are still captives today. How many of our own people remain captive—those taken away in the forced removal of children, and in various other circumstances? How many people in Northern Epirus are not living as captives? But this word “captive” can also be understood spiritually. How many are captives in the hands of Satan, bound beneath their sins, without even realizing it? They are like the mentally ill who are bound in chains.

They do not feel their bondage, because they live in the kingdom of Satan, in the kingdom of sickness. They do not realize it. Many people are like this. And this is the most wretched condition of all, because when a person does not understand the state into which he has fallen, he does not call upon God or upon Christ to have these bonds cast off from him.

Then help must come from outside, from the so-called reborn Christian who went to Church not merely to punch a timecard proving that he was present so that he might collect his wages, but to strive and struggle, to unite his prayer with the prayers of the others, and to serve Satan with notice of eviction.

“The prayer of a righteous person has great power,” as does the supplication of the Mother who prays to the Master of all. So we must not simply dismiss this by saying, “We have no captives.” There are many captives; and if we understand captivity in its spiritual sense, there are countless captives.

Among us, in our surroundings, in our families, and among those dear to us, there are people who are still held in chains by Satan. This Satan must be served notice of eviction, for, as the Fathers say, he holds the scepter and the reins of the human soul.

For their salvation, the salvation of both soul and body, let us pray to the Lord. So when the deacon, holding his orarion, calls us, “In peace, let us pray to the Lord,” he is calling us to pray for these things as well. As soon as we hear them, our nous—the spiritual intellect—must turn toward them, and our soul must turn toward Him, inwardly saying, “Yes, Amen.”

Then comes another similar prayer: “For our deliverance from all tribulation, wrath, danger, and necessity, let us pray to the Lord.” We ask Him to rescue us, save us, and deliver us: “But deliver us from the evil one.”

Deliver us and guard us from the influence of the evil one, from every tribulation and from wrath. If someone could be taken back to the first years of Christianity, when people struggled amid hardships and tribulations, surrounded by true beasts—beasts who had human form but were lions at heart—then he would understand this tribulation and wrath, all these forces arrayed against us, from which Christ alone can rescue and protect a person.

Imagine being ordered to deny Christ, under threat that otherwise they will take away your wife, execute your child, take away your husband, or throw you into prison. Imagine such tribulation. How difficult it is to remain protected from the wrath of Satan, who seeks to sweep you away and leave nothing standing.

The Church asks this because she is praying for people made of dust, clothed in flesh with all its weaknesses, people who can easily give way. She asks for the strength that will deliver us. We are not strong enough to endure the furnace of these tribulations, the onslaught of this wrath, this malice, and this drive to destroy everything sacred and holy, as has happened especially to the Orthodox faith.

Strength is needed against every danger and necessity. A person faces a great many material and spiritual needs, and through this prayer he asks Christ to heal them, to lessen his needs and dangers, to guard him, as it were, and to repel the flaming arrows of the evil one.

And all these things depend upon the pure prayer of the faithful person, whether offered privately or in the Church. Yet this too escapes many people, because we cannot take in what the prayer is saying. We do not even pay attention to it, so that we might seek out its meaning and discuss it.

What, then, is it saying, so that from now on we may take a conscious position? After speaking of all these things, especially those concerning the human soul, it says: “Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and keep us, O God, by Thy grace.” In other words: receive us, take hold of us, help us, and save us.

“Have mercy on us and keep us.” Have mercy on us; grant us mercy and all these gifts of grace:

health, release from captivity, healing of soul and body, an angel of peace, peace with the world, favorable weather for the fruits of the earth, and all the rest. Grant us all these things as mercy, not as wages, because many believe they are entitled to them. That is not so. “By Thy grace”: Thou wilt give them to us as a gift. We are not entitled to them. We are sinners. A person must believe this, because if he does not believe that he is a sinner...

Saint John Climacus says:

“Even if you ascend the ladder of the virtues, pray for the forgiveness of sins.” Even if you possess every virtue—while we do not possess even one of them rightly—even if you possess them all, pray for the forgiveness of sins.

Then, in a certain sense, you safeguard whatever small virtue you may have by securing it in humility. You hide it behind humility, saying, “I have done nothing. And if I did anything, Thou didst do it through me.”

I used to give this example: “Can an orange tree that was once a bitter-orange tree boast because it now bears sweet oranges? What can it say? ‘Look at me, bearing oranges’? But until yesterday you were a bitter-orange tree. If you bear sweet oranges today, it is because a graft from an orange tree was inserted into you. If we remove that graft, that bud, you will once again bear bitter oranges. That is your own nature.”

The graft itself contains no bitter sap, but the bitter juices are transformed when the graft is inserted. It is the graft that changes them, turning a bitter orange into a sweet one. Therefore, the fruit is not your own; it belongs to the graft implanted in you, and that graft is called Christ.

That is the truth. Christ is the grafting of souls, and through Christ a person does good. This is the crucial point. Consequently, I am not the one doing these things. An orange tree cannot boast that it produces oranges when it does so only after it has been grafted. The orange belongs to the graft.

If the graft is removed, the tree will once again produce bitter oranges, because its root has not ceased to be bitter. That is why Paul says in Romans: “And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.”

If Christ is in us, He holds our reins, takes the helm, and directs both the flesh and the nous—the spiritual intellect. The question, then, is how we may succeed in having Christ dwell within us, how Christ may enter the soul.

This is how a person will be saved. If you accomplish this, then something truly happens. So, after telling Him all these things, we now say: “Take hold of us, help us, save us, and have mercy on us. Take hold of us; we surrender ourselves to Thee. Receive us and keep us in Thine own way.”

Thou canst protect us from every danger and from every enemy, visible and invisible. Save us not by our righteousness, but “by Thy grace,” through Thy grace. God saves the human person, helps him, and has mercy on him.

And He preserves us, not because of man’s good works, but because of something else, which is called the gift of Christ, or simply grace. That is why it says here, “By Your grace, preserve us”—not by my righteousness, but by Your grace.

Then the prayer brings forward the Theotokos and the Saints: “our Most Holy, immaculate…” That is, the Most Holy Theotokos who is undefiled and untouched by stain—the immaculate, undefiled, and pure one.

“Our most blessed and glorious Lady, the Theotokos.” Our Lady is the Theotokos—God-bearer—not merely the Christ-bearer. Some wanted to call her Christ-bearer rather than Theotokos, so as to muddy the waters concerning the One who was born: implying that she bore not the true Christ, but merely some ‘christ.’ For there were many who were called christs in the Old Testament: the prophets were anointed, the kings were anointed, and so they were called anointed ones.

Here the Church proclaims the dogma of the Theotokos, and this is a point over which many stumble and for which they will be severely judged. If Protestantism is questioned about the Theotokos, it recoils. It does not accept this teaching. Although it loudly insists that Christ is God, it does not wish to acknowledge the Theotokos as such.

It would prefer her to be merely a good woman, merely a Mary, as they say—one virgin among others. Not the Virgin, not the one unique Virgin, but ‘a virgin’; they add the word ‘a.’ In the same way, they add the word ‘merely’ and say, ‘merely in remembrance.’ Not simply ‘in remembrance,’ but ‘merely in remembrance.’ That word is their own addition.

This is therefore a serious matter. Long ago, Saint Gregory the Theologian defined it dogmatically, as though prophesying in the Holy Spirit and leaving them without excuse: those who reject Mary as Theotokos do not accept Christ as God either.

For if Christ is God, what else should the woman who bore Him be called, if not Theotokos? She bore God. If she did not bear God—if Mary is not the Theotokos—then she did not bear God. And they are wrong to insist that they believe in God while rejecting His mother.

Saint Gregory says, “Whoever does not accept Mary as Theotokos is separated from the Godhead.” You do not believe in the divinity of Christ. There is the answer—an answer many have failed to heed, even though they imagine themselves to be Christians.

How does one reject the divinity of Christ? By rejecting the Theotokos. Here the Church insists: “our Lady, the Theotokos.” We pray to her. And it says, “the Ever-Virgin Mary”—not one who was a virgin only for a time, but the Ever-Virgin: before giving birth, in giving birth, and after giving birth, Ever-Virgin.

These are what are called the three stars of the Theotokos. The three stars she bears signify her virginity before, during, and after giving birth: she is the Ever-Virgin. This also prompted the writing of a small booklet entitled The Three Stars of the Theotokos, which we have available outside.

The perpetual virginity of the Theotokos is, of course, also a Mystery. Whoever stumbles over this—for the Ever-Virginity is a dogma—is not far from Hell, but very near it. It is a Mystery. The manner in which it happened, how and why, is an entire subject in itself, and we discussed it in our talk on the Annunciation.

We have also written about it in that small book. The Son of God becomes the Son of the Virgin. Why was He born of a Virgin, and how did she remain a Virgin? The Church proclaims the dogma in her hymnography: “In the Red Sea, an image of the Bride who knew no husband was once prefigured.” What happened at the Red Sea, it says, was this: the sea opened, Israel passed through on foot without being wet, and then the sea closed and remained impassable. So it was with the virginity of the Theotokos: Emmanuel passed through, and she remained incorrupt.

There are many answers there from Holy Scripture and the Fathers, which can help anyone who truly wishes to understand. In this event the prophecy of the Prophet Ezekiel is fulfilled. If you have seen Byzantine iconography, especially wall paintings, you will know that the Prophet Ezekiel is shown with a closed gate. This signifies the virginity of the Theotokos.

That is, God entered and came forth, while the gate remained impassable. The virginity of the Theotokos is a dogma, and in this short prayer at the end of the Great Litany, the Church gives us a concise and dogmatic proclamation.

She is therefore the Most Holy—not merely a saint, but holy in every respect. According to Saint Gregory the Theologian, she was not a virgin only in bodily virginity: she was virgin in sight, virgin in taste, virgin in hearing, virgin in smell—virgin in all things. Thus she is not merely a saint, but the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), however much those who hate her may stumble over this. They hate her not simply as a person, but as the instrument through whom the divinity was veiled and brought forth among us as man. Satan was deceived by what was human—by the tears, the eating, and the sleep of God living as man.

So Satan raised his hand against Him and met his own death. He thought he would remove Him as merely a righteous man. He could not see what lay behind the Cross; he did not perceive it. That is why he says, “It would have been better for me not to have brought down the Son of Mary.”

She is therefore not merely a saint, but the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy): immaculate, untouched, undefiled, spotless, most blessed, and glorious Lady; higher than the Cherubim, beyond the Seraphim, the throne of the Dominions, and so forth. She is “our Lady, the Theotokos”—not merely Christ-bearer—and Ever-Virgin before, during, and after giving birth. “Remembering her together with all the Saints, let us commend ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God.”

Together with the Theotokos, the prayer also invokes all the Saints, so that we too may entrust our life to Christ. We ask Him to receive all the petitions we offered earlier in the rest of the litany. I repeat: many stumble greatly over the matter of the Theotokos, because they do not want her brought into this place of intercession.

Protestantism, in particular, brings forward that familiar verse from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to Timothy: “There is one mediator between God and men.” Starting from this verse, they exclude the Theotokos and the Saints. The Millenarians reject the Saints even more emphatically, claiming that they no longer exist.

Consequently, they say that we cannot ask departed people for their intercessions.

Regarding the first point, I say that their objection has no basis. Scripture says, “There is one mediator between God and men.” Do we say there is another mediator? There is one mediator between God and men: Christ. Among us, the Theotokos is not placed between God and mankind, but between Christ and mankind.

This is their mistake, and they must take care to understand it. God is here, Christ is here, the believer is here, and the Most Holy Theotokos is here. As an Orthodox Christian in the Church, do I not say to her, “Intercede with Christ, who was born of you, O Lady of the world; be our mediatrix”? We say this openly and aloud, and they know it too.

In the Church we say, “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” We do not say, “O Father, save us.”

What, do we wish to overturn the hierarchy? We send our Most Holy Theotokos to Christ. She intercedes between the faithful and Christ. “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior, save us.” Christ saves; the Theotokos intercedes. Where is our error? What here is contrary to dogma or contrary to the Gospel?

Holy Scripture says, according to Saint James, that “the effective prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Why, then, do they forbid us to bring her forward in intercession? Who, after all, possesses greater power and boldness before God than the Most Holy Theotokos?

No one. After God, she and the saints possess this boldness. So when Saint Paul says to Timothy, “between God and men,” he does not say “between Jesus and men.” He places the believer on one side, God on the other, and Christ as mediator between them.

Certainly, the Lord remains in His place, at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us, as Saint Paul says. But we beseech our Most Holy Theotokos to intercede with Him, for she has a mother’s claim upon Jesus: she carried Him, lent Him her flesh, nourished Him, and cared for Him. He Himself granted her this privilege. We say, “Through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Savior born of her, save us.” We do not disrupt the proper order. Our position is sound.

Everything contained in Orthodox hymnology is true. It has been established through the Holy Spirit. It is Orthodox; it is dogma, and under no circumstances may we call it into question simply because we do not understand it or because our minds cannot contain it.

We may be unable to interpret it or reason it out philosophically. I agree. But we cannot reject it merely because we cannot explain it philosophically or fit it within our minds.

Can anyone contain the sea within his nous, his spiritual intellect? Does he possess a vessel large enough to hold it? He does not, yet the sea exists. I cannot say, “I reject it because I cannot contain it.” Nor can I say, “I must explain this in the same way I explained everything else, because others demand an explanation from me.”

Here, then, this short petition concludes with a concise dogmatic teaching concerning the Most Holy Theotokos and the saints: “Commemorating all the saints,” and commending ourselves, one another, and all of us together, “let us pray to the Lord,” beseeching Him to grant our petitions.

The Church does not accept that they are dead and gone, as people say; She regards them as those who have fallen asleep. “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.” “Well, if he has fallen asleep,” they say, “he will rise; he will awaken.”

Death, properly understood, belongs to Satan and to unbelievers. For the believer—and for Christ—it is sleep. We shall awaken as surely as when an alarm sounds, whether we want to or not. This must become firm faith within us: a person lies down to sleep without knowing how many years that sleep will last.

Abimelech slept for seventy years beneath Agrippa’s fig tree. Baruch did likewise, and the youths in the days of Decius slept for three hundred and fifty years. What does it matter if we sleep for five hundred, one thousand, or two thousand years? That is His concern. We shall awaken whether we want to or not. We must believe this. Then people must stop tearing their hair, stop saying, “We have lost our loved ones,” and cease the mourning and all those pagan customs that blaspheme the Resurrection and the faith concerning death proclaimed by the Gospel.

As for us who are alive and remain, he says, we must not regard these things as empty or evil. We too shall depart one day. I do not want you to be ignorant; I want you to know that we too shall one day depart from here in the twinkling of an eye, if the Second Coming overtakes us.

Otherwise, we shall lay down our bodies and receive them again at Christ’s command. This must become firm faith. Many people do not want the saints.

The Protestants do not even want to hear about the saints. They revile their relics, although we have miracles and daily witness the sanctifying grace that comes from them. We also see how Satan speaks about the saints. If anyone wishes to see in practice who the saints are and what power they possess, he can make a quick journey to Cephalonia. Let him stand near the holy relic and listen to the demon-possessed—those suffering from unclean spirits—and hear how the demons speak through them concerning the saints.

Let such a person go to Corfu or Zakynthos, where the holy relics are found—relics that terrify Satan. These saints and their bodily remains possess grace against unclean spirits. Let him go there and hear, from Satan’s own confession, the power possessed by these holy relics, which are so greatly reviled.

More recently, let him go to Aegina, because Saint Nektarios of Aegina also possesses the abundant grace given to him by God, including grace against unclean spirits. Satan says, “We already had the Monk; now we also have the Bishop, the Master as well. Now we have him too, and he has also been given that grace against unclean spirits.”

If you ever go to Aegina, look to the left of the saint’s holy skull. There you will see a chain belonging to Georgios Andrikopoulos of Patras. They brought him from Patras bound in iron. When the little boat reached Aegina, a monk came down, loosened his chain, and it fell away.

The man took the chain up to the monastery and left a short note: “Thank you, Saint Nektarios, for coming to me on the boat, as I was coming to you, and freeing me from the bonds of Satan.” The saints, then, possess power. This is precisely why Satan, knowing where he suffers harm, directs his attacks against them. A war has been waged against the saints.

A great war. They revile the holy relics with vile words that I am not permitted to repeat. But if they truly wish to stand by their claim that they are scriptural, that they believe only the Scriptures—Scripture alone, and nothing outside it—I would ask them: Have they never read about the resurrection brought about by the relics of the Prophet Elisha?

Is it not in their Scriptures? Is it not in 2 Kings 13:20–21 of the Old Testament? It is Fourth Kingdoms according to the Septuagint and Second Kings according to the Bible societies. Does it not say there that, while raiders were moving through the land, some men became afraid and did not take a dead man to his family tomb? Instead, they hurriedly threw him into Elisha’s tomb, without knowing whose tomb it was. When the man touched the relics of the Prophet Elisha, he rose from the dead and went away.

If, then, you blind Pharisee, the relics of men of the Old Testament—the age of shadows, of bulls and calves—could even raise the dead, can the relics of martyrs, the relics of those slaughtered for Jesus, soaked in the Blood of this God and nourished by His Body, not work miracles? Dip even a tiny relic into a little water.

It will remain incorrupt forever. Forever. Put in a bone from your father as well. Put in one from your son, or from your neighbor. Before long, it will begin to stink. Our faith is not merely faith; it is also knowledge.

This is what Christ did—not on Pascha itself, but on the Sunday of Thomas, Antipascha—when He said to him: “Come here. Put your finger into the mark of the nails, and do not be unbelieving. You want proof; you believe, but your faith is not yet complete.”

“Put your finger here.” And Thomas cried out, “My Lord and my God!” Yet Holy Scripture does not tell us whether he actually did so, whether he dared to put his finger there, although the Church celebrates Thomas’s touching of Christ.

Christ accepted that Thomas should touch Him, so that knowledge might be added to his faith; and even today He allows this for the Orthodox. We Orthodox today do not have faith alone; we also have knowledge.

When the water of our Agiasmos does not spoil, I ask you: what is that? What is it? Does it require philosophical explanations? Take some holy water from the Catholics as well. Unless they have salted it, it will stink within two days. Otherwise, it must have been salted, as Konstantinos Oikonomos ex Oikonomon observed.

Ask a Protestant to take a little Agiasmos and make leaven for you, using a little basil from the Cross or a holy palm branch. Ask him to make it for you: let him take flour from the grocer, mix it, and give it to you.

How, then, can the Saint have no power? How can this little lamb, slaughtered beside the other Lamb—the great Lamb—with whom he walks and remains united, have no power? Yet we regard the saints as dead, as lost in obscurity.

Those who die in Christ are alive. They live because they are faithful to the God who is the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. Paul says this, our Christ repeats it, and the Old Testament also proclaims it.

I have gathered before me several Patristic testimonies on this subject. For example, Asterios of Amaseia, a bishop, answered Eunomios, one of the heretics of that time, concerning the saints: “We, Eunomios, do not worship the martyrs; we honor them.”

That is, we do not offer them adoration; adoration belongs to God. But we honor them “as genuine worshippers of Christ.” “We do not worship human beings, but we marvel at those who, in times of temptation, faithfully revered God.”

We marvel at how, when faced with terrible circumstances and ordered to deny God, they revered Him and did not deny Him. “Nor is our devotion to them shown without reward, for we enjoy the benefit of their intercession before God.” We do not labor and face danger in vain; through these people of God, we receive a reward.

“What crime is there, then, in honoring the martyrs and striving ourselves to please God?” What crime have we committed, he asks Eunomios, that you call us idolaters because we honor Christ’s martyrs, Christ’s soldiers, and strive to please God? For it is pleasing to God that we honor His own soldiers and martyrs.

How, then, can anyone accuse us for taking refuge in them? Saint John of Damascus also says concerning the honor shown to the saints: “We must honor the saints as friends of Christ, and as children and heirs of God.”

That is what he says: we must honor the saints as friends of Christ and as children of God. As Saint John the Theologian and Evangelist says, “As many as received Him, to them He gave the authority to become children of God.” Therefore, all who received Christ are children of God.

How could I fail to honor and revere them? How could I speak of them in the utterly profane way that you do? Thus, they are no longer servants, but sons, because they received Christ. “And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.”

“How, then, should we not honor those who became servants, friends, and sons of God? How should we not honor the living temples of God?” He regards the martyr, the Saint, and every Christian as a living temple of God.

They are the living dwelling places of God. Yes, they must be honored. Saint John says that it is an honor to build churches in the name of these saints and martyrs, to bring offerings there, to honor their memorials, and to rejoice spiritually in them. Through their prayer, we hope to receive benefit.

Our actions, therefore, are justified: we build churches, remember the saints, and commemorate them because we are to be edified through them. Saint Jerome, answering a man whom we might today call a Protestant—Vigilantius, who blasphemed the saints—says:

“You suppose that the Saints are dead, and for that reason you blaspheme. They have died, you say, so what do you seek from them now?”

“Read the Gospel.” Read to him, he says, the Gospel you hold in your hand: “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.” If, then, the Saints are alive, he tells him, they are not shut up in that honorable prison of yours—in the prison you have made for them.

For this is the argument you make: “He died there. Why do you ask him to come and help you? Can he leave the prison in which your argument confines him and come to your aid?”

That is the question.

He answers: “You impose laws upon God, and you bind the Apostles with chains.” You legislate, he tells him, and put the Saints in prison, confining them so that they cannot hasten anywhere, “but must remain imprisoned until the day of Judgment,” unable to move.

And you do not allow them to accompany the Lord, although it is written of the Saints that “they follow the Lamb wherever He goes”—Revelation 14:4. If the Lamb is everywhere present, then we must believe that those who are with the Lamb are also present everywhere. Yet, as I shall explain shortly, you will see something relevant to this.

The devil and the demons roam everywhere, and because of their great speed they are almost everywhere present. The devils are able to come, but after the martyrs have poured out their blood, you shut them in a tomb and keep them there, not allowing them to come forth at all.

This is a scriptural, positive, and reasonable answer. Now I will explain what I promised: “We must believe that they are present everywhere.” That is, we must believe that the Saints too are present everywhere, since the Lamb—Christ—is everywhere present; and wherever the Lamb, Christ, is, there they are also. We must therefore believe that they are present everywhere.

Someone may object that omnipresence belongs to God alone. All created beings—the angels, the demons, everyone, and the Saints—exist within place and time because they are creatures. At any given moment, if they are here, they cannot be there; and if they are there, they cannot be here.

Saint Athanasius the Great gives us the answer when asked about this very matter: How is it possible for the same Saint, or for the Most Holy Theotokos, who does not possess omnipresence by nature, to be here and there at the same moment—to be everywhere?

Where the Saint is not personally present, an angel acts in his stead. An angel is sent on his behalf and acts where the Saint himself is not. This is the answer given by Saint Athanasius the Great. Thus, what we call their presence everywhere means that help will hasten to us immediately through an angel.

It is like making a telephone call and having emergency assistance arrive at once. The same happens in the case of the Saints. It is a dogma that omnipresence belongs to God alone—to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

All others exist within place and time, but they render help through an angel, as Saint Athanasius the Great explains. And here is one more testimony, from Saint Isidore of Pelusium, concerning the honor we show not only to holy relics, but also to everything connected with a Saint, with the Most Holy Theotokos, with Christ, and so forth.

You see a believer go and take a small stone or a little soil from a holy place, keeping it as a blessing and a safeguard. Saint Isidore, responding to pagans who did not believe in what the Orthodox do, says: “Are you scandalized by the dust of the martyrs’ bodies?” If you are scandalized, he says, because we gather the dust from the bodies of the martyrs—bodies that you burned or threw to the lions—then ask those who have received healing from it, and learn how many cures from suffering have been granted.

Go and ask those who have been made well, and let them tell you about the power of this dust from the relics of the Saints. Then you will not only come to understand what is taking place, but you will also desire what has been accomplished; you too, he says, will be drawn to seek initiation into these realities that the Orthodox experience.

Therefore, what the Church has placed here was established, as I told you earlier, through the Holy Spirit. They did not simply decide to compose some hymns. And if we enter the assemblies of those who accuse us today of following merely human commandments, we shall find that they too have prayers.

Go among the Protestants, to the so-called Free Evangelical churches. Go and see that they have a service and hymns. Yet they disdain to have their Saint, their Father.

They have various professors or foreign figures from abroad. They too have such people and have fashioned their own—not those whom the Holy Spirit has sealed and who possess true substance. Even what they have, they have borrowed from there. But it is all so faded and tasteless. Anyone who has tasted the truth can see how shallow these things are. And yet they busy themselves with straw and—

As this prayer concludes, the words “let us commend ourselves to God” are both a prayer and a rebuke. Let each person ask himself—I need not ask him: Does he truly surrender himself to God? Does he truly say, “Take charge of everything. Take it all. I surrender myself to You. Do with me whatever You will; shape me and work within me”? It is not true.

Even when we are in need and tribulation, though we say to Him, “Take charge of us,” we always hold something back. This is precisely why even more advanced Christians have no peace.

They pray to God, the Father, who is almighty, all-seeing, holy, and provident. What does He lack? And you ask such a person, “Do you truly have a Father in Heaven?” “Of course.” Yet you do not see it. You hear, and still do not hear, when I say, “Our Father.”

And how can you live as though you were an orphan? Why are you so sorrowful? Why are you afraid? Why are you in despair? What is it that frightens you? We do not give everything to Him. The prayer says, “our whole life”—our whole life, our entire existence, everything material and spiritual, everything we have. Take it all, Lord, and handle it Yourself; bring good out of it and provide for us. But we do not do this.

The hardest thing for a person is to surrender himself to Christ. He may stop stealing, stop blaspheming, stop committing fornication, begin having the children he once refused to have, begin fasting when he never fasted before, and begin giving alms though until now he was miserly.

He will do all these things. But to surrender himself to Christ—that is the hardest thing. This is why Christ began there: “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself.” That is the heart of the matter. We do not trust Him completely. Our whole life? No. Take most of it—but we still hold something back.

That is why He does not always take charge of our affairs. No matter how capable a lawyer may be—and indeed, the more capable he is—the more he expects from you.

As I was saying, he will not take on your case if you hold back even one thing. You must give him the entire file, trust him with it, and pay him—and pay him handsomely besides—before he will take your case; and in the end he may even betray you. But here the matter is different. You entrust another human being with your most confidential matters, the things that could expose you to danger. But we do not entrust them to God. We always hold something back, and that is why we are always weary. Even the most spiritually mature Christians, who by their standing and knowledge ought to be free, ought to be joyful every day, even amid the most severe tribulations—tribulations that might drive others as far as suicide.

There was a man walking along with a sack on his back. Someone took pity on him in the heat, stopped, and said, “Come, climb aboard.” So the man climbed aboard, for the driver wanted to give him relief from both the burden and the journey in the noonday heat. After they had traveled for quite some time, the driver suddenly turned around to see what he was doing and whether he had fallen asleep.

It is like the man who climbed aboard but kept carrying his bundle on his shoulder. This seemed so strange and comical that the driver stopped and said to him, “My good Christian, I took you aboard so that you could put down your burden and rest.” Yet there he was, still carrying it.

“Well,” the man replied, “it is enough that you are carrying me. I do not want you to have to carry my burden as well.”

Yes, I know—it makes us laugh. But how many of us are just like him? “Our whole life”—but keep one secret back. Do not give Him everything; Christ will not be able to manage it all—it is too much! It is like some women who ask, “May I write many names on the commemoration list?” Because if she writes too many, how will Christ possibly manage them all, you understand?

Just a few good ones; leave the others out. What sort of God do you imagine Him to be? How do you see this Christ?

You go out into the sunlight, and the sun does not shout to someone else, “Go and hide, or you will take the sunlight meant for him.” The whole world may come outside, but no one takes away what belongs to another. Each person receives his own share. And if His creation does this, what can the Creator Himself do? Yet this trust does not exist in us. We say that we trust Him, but we do not. And this is not the only instance, as we shall encounter in many other cases, if God permits us to speak further. Do you think you will leave this life and go alone into Paradise ahead of everyone else? That is a lie. You will never see it. This is the heart of the matter. That is why we emerge like shipwrecked men.

The Church of Christ is not an ark that takes in ravens and sends out ravens, that takes in lions and sends out lions. It takes in ravens and sends out doves. It takes in lions and sends out sheep. If we do not become sheep, and if after every time we attend Church we become worse, it is because we are deceitful: all these things are merely words filling the air, instead of becoming our own possession and our very life.

Let us stop here, by the grace of the Lord, and we shall return, God willing, and continue next time. Amen.

Τι, θέλουμε να χαλάσει την ιεραρχία; Τη στέλνουμε στον Χριστό, την Παναγία μας. Πρεσβεύει μεταξύ πιστού και Χριστού. «Ταις πρεσβείαις της Θεοτόκου, Σώτερ, σώσον ημάς». Ο Χριστός σώζει, η Θεοτόκος πρεσβεύει. Πού κάνουμε το λάθος; Πού είναι το αντιδογματικό και το αντιευαγγελικό;

Αγία Γραφή, ότι «δέησις δικαίου ενεργουμένη πολύ ισχύει», κατά τον Ιάκωβο. Γιατί λοιπόν μας απαγορεύουν να την παρουσιάσουμε μπροστά; Ποιος άλλωστε έχει περισσότερη δύναμη και παρρησία από την Υπεραγία Θεοτόκο;

Μεγάλος αγώνας. Ή βρίζουν τα Άγια Λείψανα με καπηλικάς λέξεις που δεν επιτρέπεται να επαναλάβω. Αλλά εάν θα ήθελα να σταθούν μόνο σε αυτό που λέγουν, ότι είναι γραφικοί, ότι πιστεύουν μόνο τη Γραφή και μόνο τη Γραφή και τίποτα άλλο απ' έξω, θα ήθελα να τους ερωτήσω: Δεν έχουν διαβάσει ποτέ τους την ανάσταση που έχουν κάνει τα λείψανα του Προφήτου Ελισσαίου;

«Υπολαμβάνεις τους Αγίους θνητούς και τούτου ένεκα βλασφημείς. Πέθαναν, τι ζητάς από αυτούς τώρα;

Διότι λέγεις ότι δύναται παρήνε, άμα εντιστάθεις και όπου ανβούλονται Διότι εσύ φέρνεις το επιχείρημα: αυτός πέθανε εκεί. Τι τον ζητάς να έρθει να σε βοηθήσει; Μπορεί να φύγει από τη φυλακή που τον βάζεις εσύ με το επιχείρημά σου, για να έρθει να σε βοηθήσει;

Τη λύση αυτή μας τη δίδει ο Μέγας Αθανάσιος, ερωτηθείς σχετικώς. Πώς είναι δυνατόν ο αυτός Άγιος ή η Υπεραγία Θεοτόκος, που δεν έχει στο ενεργητικό την πανταχού παρουσία, μπορεί καθ' ην στιγμήν, δύναται ταυτοχρόνως και εδώ και εκεί να είναι παντού;

Η λαρότητα, ε, το ξέρω, ε, αυτό δημιουργεί. Αλλά πόσοι από εμάς δεν είναι τέτοιοι. Πάσαν την ζωήν ημών, αλλά κράτα και ένα μυστικό. Μην το δίνεις όλο, δεν θα τα μπορέσει ο Χριστός, είναι πολλά. Είναι σαν μερικές που λένε: «Μπορώ να βάλω πολλά ονόματα, λέει, στο χαρτί;» Γιατί, άμα βάλει πολλά, πώς να μπορεί να τα βγάλει πέρα ο Χριστός, κατάλαβες;

Λίγα και καλά, τους άλλους μην τους βάλεις. Πώς τον φαντάζεσαι αυτόν τον Θεό, πώς τον βλέπεις αυτόν τον Χριστό;
