Summary

Panagopoulos links the Creed’s sixth and seventh articles: Christ ascended bodily, sits at the Father’s right hand, and will return in glory. Acts 1 records the Ascension and angelic promise of His return; Stephen’s vision in Acts 7 confirms His place of equal honor. Hebrews 6 and 9 presents Him as humanity’s forerunner beyond the veil and hope as an anchor cast upward. The sign of the Cross condenses this movement of descent, Incarnation, Ascension, and return. Revelation 1 and 20, Matthew 24–25, Daniel 7, Jude, and First Thessalonians 4 then portray the universal judgment, resurrection of the dead, transformation of the living, and manifestation of the Cross. Christ’s first coming was humble; His second will disclose His glory, assemble every person, and reveal whether Christian hope was truly fixed upon the life He prepared.

Those of you who were with us for our last talk will remember that we had reached what is called the sixth article of the Creed, where it says: “And He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”

This is a detail that is both scriptural and dogmatic. Christ came down from heaven, became man, suffered, died, was buried, rose again, and ascended after forty days. This is what the Synod has in mind when it formulates the Creed: “And He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”

If we read the Acts of the Apostles, chapter one, verse 11, where the Apostle and Evangelist Luke, as the author of Acts, recounts the events following the Resurrection, he says that after about forty days our Christ ascended in the presence of His disciples and the Most Holy Theotokos, and perhaps others as well.

And as He was ascending, they stood there dumbfounded, so to speak, staring at Him with their mouths open.

Two men in white appeared—clearly angels sent by God—and said to them: “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way.” The second “in this way” is an adverb in Greek, written with an omega. “He will come in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven.”

The One who is departing will come again. This passage also supports the words found further on: “And He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.” In any case, it states here that He ascended. It is scriptural proof that Christ, after He rose, ascended into heaven.

So, His Ascension is a fact. He reached heaven and is at the right hand of God. This too is confirmed by another passage of Scripture, in Acts of the Apostles, chapter seven, verse 55. When the Protomartyr Stephen was being persecuted and had offered his prayer, he finally knelt down before being stoned by the Jews, with Paul—then still Saul—giving his approval. Scripture says: “Gazing into heaven, he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God.”

He saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God: at His right hand, equal in honor and glory. That is what it means. Jesus is there as man—the man Jesus, the One who ascended. He is there in His own flesh, not in some other body, as the Jehovah’s Witnesses claim.

They say that He hid the body He had and took another one—that He borrowed it, departed in it, and will come back to retrieve the first. These are absurd and ridiculous claims. It was He Himself who took with Him His own human flesh, the flesh He had worn. In that very flesh He is at the right hand of Power, as it says elsewhere; at the right hand of God, as it says here. And this is what the Synod declares, symbolizes, and defines dogmatically: that He reached the right hand of God.

Paul also writes about this Ascension of Christ in the Epistle to the Hebrews, both in chapter six and in chapter nine. In chapter nine he says: “For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;”

In other words, He went there, so to speak, as our representative. Human nature, in the person of Jesus, returns to the Father. It returns to Paradise. Do you understand? Paul himself, writing to his own people, the Hebrews, and seeking to persuade them, says the following

in the final verses of chapter six:

“We who have fled for refuge have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner on our behalf.”

Our Christ, he says, went as a forerunner on our behalf. We have three forerunners: before God became man, John was the forerunner; so that man might become god by grace, Jesus was the forerunner; and before Jesus comes again to judge the living and the dead, Elijah will be the forerunner.

Elijah the Glorious is the forerunner of Christ’s Second Coming. There are three great and solemn events: God becoming man, man’s theosis—his becoming god by grace—and the judgment of man by Jesus. In these three great events there are three forerunners: John, Jesus, and Elijah.

Here, then, Christ is presented as having entered the inner place behind the veil, becoming a forerunner on our behalf. He was the first to return, because all of us, on account of sin—on account of ancestral sin—could not return to Paradise.

That is why we pray: “Grant me the homeland I long for; make me once again a citizen of Paradise.” Make me a citizen of Paradise once more. And we become citizens of Paradise through God, through Jesus, who came and became man so that we might once again become gods by grace.

That is also why he speaks of our anchor—I do not know whether you noticed it. He says that we must cast it upward, toward heaven. Everyone else casts an anchor downward in order to hold fast. The Christian must cast his anchor upward.

The things below cannot hold him fast. If he casts his anchor somewhere down here in order to stand firm and avoid being swept away by the currents of this life, he is like a ship that casts its anchor into its own hold.

If a ship casts its anchor into its own hold, it is not made secure. So too, if a person casts his anchor somewhere down here—in his own worth, his knowledge, his conviction that his own belief is the true one, his wallet, the people around him, and so forth—let him understand this: he is like someone casting an anchor into his own ship’s hold. He remains in danger, and he will be lost.

So Paul says: since He went there as our forerunner and remains there until He comes again to judge the living and the dead—as the Creed goes on to say, and as He Himself instructed us—His departure did not leave a void. He immediately gave notice, lighting, as it were, another red signal: “This Jesus, who was taken up from you, will come in the same way.” Wait for Him; the matter is not over.

What remains to be fulfilled in the whole work of the divine economy of the Incarnation is: “And He shall come again.” That is what is still lacking. Scripture says that He will come. That He came—yes. Where and how—all this has been fulfilled. That He would be buried, die, and rise again—yes. That He would ascend—yes. What remains now? “And He is coming again.” “This Jesus, who was taken up from you...”

The Ascension is closely bound up with the words, “He will come in the same way”—He will return. In our Church, we are reminded of this through the Cross, through the sign of the Cross. And when a person makes the sign of the Cross—I am not speaking here of those who are afraid to cross themselves, or those who do not know how and merely scribble something in front of themselves, making all sorts of strange motions—

those who make the sign of the Cross correctly join their three fingers together, confessing the Godhead in three hypostases; and the two fingers folded below confess Christ the God-Man. Good. They first place the hand here, at the forehead, because God is without beginning; then He became man one day, descended here, ascended, and will return. He is coming again.

To make the sign of the Cross correctly is an entire doctrine, a confession of faith. You do not make it however you please, nor do you make it as the papal Christians do, with all five fingers open. For in Rome, and among all who believe as Rome does, they now have many gods: the Godhead in three hypostases, the Most Holy Theotokos, and the Pope. They have three gods over there.

That is why they make it with the whole palm open. But our faith confesses one Triune God and the one God-Man, Jesus. The God who is without beginning became man in the womb of the Theotokos, ascended, and is coming again to judge the living and the dead.

With a few movements, a person confesses the whole doctrine of the faith and is continually reminded of the truth. Whenever I see such an opportunity, I seize it to tell you: those of you who do not make the sign of the Cross, reconsider, and do not let the devil deceive you.

I am not speaking of those who are ashamed, or those who rush and tremble to raise their hand when they find themselves in public, in a secular place, perhaps among atheists and unbelievers, and are afraid. But those who are not afraid should take care to make the sign of the Cross properly.

Do not rush. If you do not wish to make it three times, make it once—but make that one sign correctly, because it is a weapon. If it is not made correctly, the weapon is broken; and Satan, the enemy, takes it by the barrel and turns it against our own head. That is what I have to say on this matter.

Ephesians 4:10 also says that Christ departed and ascended into the heavens. As we have said, when we speak of His ascent into the heavens, we are speaking with reference to His human nature.

God is present everywhere: in Hades, with the thief, in the Tomb, in Paradise, and with us, and so on. Let us not confuse these things. Here they are speaking of the man Jesus, who ascended—the One who was crucified, buried, suffered, and rose. It is He. The Godhead is neither buried, nor does it suffer pain, nor is it crucified; the Godhead is present everywhere.

It was His human nature, then, that went there. God is present everywhere. Let us not place God within space and time, because only if God were a created being would He be confined within space and time, as the angels are, both the good and the evil.

Moreover, He Himself had foretold this Ascension, if you remember, as recorded in John 14:2–3: “I go to prepare a place for you, so that where I am, you may be also.” I am going, He says, to prepare a place for you. I go ahead as our forerunner, to prepare it for you, so that where I go, you too may come.

But does a person today truly believe this, even a believer? I am not speaking of the unbeliever, who has nowhere to set his foot and find support. Does the believer truly believe that he will meet Christ there and go to a place better than this one?

For if this world is governed by the ruler of this world, it is only natural that things should be bad here. But if that world is governed by the ruler of that world, who is Christ, will things not be good there?

Many people have proofs, not merely indications, that their loved ones—or they themselves, in a certain sense—have labored in such a way as to create the conditions for meeting Christ with joy. Yet they do not rejoice in this. Such people become Christ’s worst enemies.

Christ’s worst enemies! He abhors this lack of trust in Him; He abhors it. This probably happens to many people. I am deeply affected by this subject in what I am writing for you. I am writing a book entitled “Things Christians Have Overlooked,” and this was the first subject I was working on when I left home. I left the manuscript there, dealing with this very subject.

Christ is deeply wounded when He sees a believer who does not trust Him. Christ is deeply wounded when He sees a believer saying to Him, “I would rather remain in this world than come with You.”

Very well, I went to prepare a place for you. Do you think I will not have prepared it well? Do you not trust Me? Then in whom will you place your trust? And what, in the end, will become of you? Will you remain down there?

That is the point. How absurd it would be for a little chick, while still inside the shell, to say, “I have laid an egg!”

Tell me, how absurd would that be? Yet we are worse, because at least it is only a chick. We are not chicks; we are images of God: “I am an image of Your ineffable glory.”

Is that a small thing? It is a confession of faith. And yet people do not believe it. They may say, in the final analysis, “Yes, I believe; I would gladly come,” perhaps rather half-heartedly. But in practice, they do not believe it. They cannot say what John says at the end of his book, when Christ declares, “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me”—that is, “I am bringing the reward with Me, and I am coming to reward you.”

And John says, “Yes, come, Lord Jesus. Come; I am waiting for You.” But we do not want this. Have you ever read those beautiful words written and spoken by Saint Ignatius the God-bearer as he was being taken to Rome? Some people had hurried ahead, hoping to prevent the wild beasts of Rome from killing him, to keep him from being thrown to them, and so forth.

“They are servants of Satan who would intervene to prevent me from becoming sweet bread, ground by the teeth of the lions for Christ.”

Did I say servants of Satan? He called them antichrists. We would long for someone to be found who could save him, while he wanted to arrive there an hour sooner. Where is such faith among us? Nineteen hundred years have passed. Have we believed it? We still have not truly believed it.

Here Christ speaks of it prophetically, so that they will not grieve over losing Him as their companion and protector. “I am going above on an important task. I am leaving to prepare a place for you, so that where I am, you may be also.”

Does a mother willingly give her child to go with Christ and the Most Holy Theotokos? Do we willingly give a husband, a wife, a father, or a mother? Do we surrender them or not? This is why Heaven grieves. The Lord says, as it were, “If someone else—an unbeliever—said this to Me, I could understand. But when you say it, you who supposedly believe in Me from morning until night, that I cannot accept.”

These are the people mentioned in the Apocalypse: “Because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I am about to vomit you out of My mouth.” It would be better if you were cold; at least then you would have taken a definite position. We ourselves sometimes say something similar. Perhaps we have placed great hopes in one of our children—because we deceive ourselves—and then that child does something completely contrary to what we expected.

We say, “I would have expected it from anyone, but I never expected it from little John. I never expected this from Catherine. I am stunned.” It is more bitter for the parent precisely because it came from that child. It is not merely what happened, but that it was this particular child who did it. You can now understand how God regards such conduct among human beings.

This article was therefore placed here very rightly by the Holy Fathers, because it is firmly grounded in Holy Scripture, as we would say in this case.

He ascended. The rest of what the sign of the Cross proclaims, as I told you, is that He will come again: the other movement, downward from here, shows that He will descend and come. This is stated in the seventh article of the Creed. It is the final event concerning Christ.

For the Symbol of Faith speaks chiefly about two persons: Christ, who comes from the Father, and the Holy Spirit, who likewise comes from the Father. Up to the seventh article, it speaks about our Lord Jesus Christ.

From the eighth article onward, it begins to speak about the Holy Spirit. Here it has shown us who Christ is and whence He comes: begotten, not made; born of the Virgin through the Holy Spirit; He suffered, was buried, rose, and ascended. Now He will come again, and this account concerning Him is completed.

Then the Creed turns to the Holy Spirit. What remains, therefore, is Christ’s return. The Symbol of Faith expresses it in these words: “And He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, whose Kingdom shall have no end.”

Three points bring this work to its completion. First: “And He shall come again with glory.” The words “with glory” distinguish the Second Coming from His first coming, when He did not come in glory. At His first coming, as you remember, there was no room for Him at the inn.

You know the persecution He endured. You know that He fled as one pursued, going to Egypt to escape the sword of Herod. You know what He suffered under Pilate, in the days of Pilate, and at the hands of the Jews.

And you know how far it went. But now He will not come so that we may beat Him and mockingly ask Him, “Can You prophesy who struck You?” There will be no spitting, no blows, none of those things.

He will come in the fullness of glory. There is a very striking image of this in the first chapter of the Apocalypse, verse 7. It states clearly that when He comes, He will come in the fullness of glory, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Ask for one of those little books outside and pass it hand to hand until it reaches me—the one that says...

This will distinguish it from the other coming of Christ. At His first coming, He came without outward display. No one knew Him, neither the prominent nor the ordinary people. He revealed Himself only to the poor shepherds, to the pure in heart, and to those men who were there in the East—the learned men, the philosophers, the Magi, and the astronomers, as we were saying.

Today, it says, He will come in the fullness of glory. When the Evangelist Matthew describes this event, he gives us a vivid image of how the Second Coming of Christ will take place. He says clearly that Christ will come in His full glory, with all the holy angels, and He will sit upon His throne and separate the sheep from the goats.

This is a scene that will never be repeated, and every human being must prepare for it. God appointed this moment from the foundation of the world, and He granted the prophets to behold it and write it down.

For example, Jude writes in his epistle—which, as you know, consists of one chapter and comes just before the Apocalypse—in verse 14: “Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied concerning these men, saying, ‘Behold, the Lord came with His holy myriads, to execute judgment.’” Whom will He judge? Everyone: “and to convict all the ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds.”

Enoch, the seventh from Adam, saw the judgment. Behold, He has come. What has He come to do? To judge. Whom will He judge? Those who have acted ungodly in word and deed. Daniel also saw this coming of His, some 650 years before Christ.

He speaks of it in chapter seven, verses 9 and 10. He describes the event as follows:

A river of fire flowed before Him; a thousand thousands ministered to Him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him.

“The court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.” If you visit the holy monasteries of the Holy Mountain, Meteora, or Mystras, wherever there is Byzantine iconography, you will see this image in the narthex.

A person leaves the Church, and as he goes out, this icon is above the door. It reminds the person leaving the Ark: “Pay attention to this, because this is what awaits you.” Always keep this image of the Judgment before you, because He will come again. And take care, lest this river cast you into that abyss, where all-devouring Hades awaits you.

John also saw this judgment and this coming of our Christ. He describes it in chapter 20, verses 11 through 13, as follows: “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.”

“And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne. And books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the Book of Life”—as though each person were recorded in a separate book. “And the dead were judged according to their deeds, by what was written in the books.”

“And the sea gave up the dead who were in it”—even those devoured by fish will be given up at His command—“and Hades gave up the dead who were in it.” Beautiful is the reasoning of the Holy Fathers behind the first Saturday of Souls. You will find it in the Triodion: what led them to establish this Saturday of Souls as a memorial for all people who died in any manner whatsoever—amid ice, through famine, at sea, or by wild beasts.

Whatever the circumstances in which these people met death, the service speaks of them all. That is why it says here that those naturally taken by Hades, those taken by death in some other way, and those taken by the sea will all rise. John saw them all.

“And the sea gave up the dead who were in it.” That is why, in the image I mentioned—the one found in the narthex of Orthodox churches—you see wild beasts appearing, as it were, to vomit forth what they have swallowed: one of them brings forth a leg it had devoured.

Another brings forth a head, another some other part—a rib, perhaps; a serpent or a fish does the same. They all give up whatever they contain, because the human person will be put together again. This is the prophecy of Ezekiel, which we have spoken about many times.

This is the classic passage teaching the re-creation of the human person, which we read after the return of the Holy Epitaphios on Great Friday. It clearly describes how we shall receive our bones again, and how sinews, flesh, skin, and spirit will return, restoring the whole person—whether we believe it or not.

Whether we believe it or not. The Lord who has spoken—will He not also act? In 1 Thessalonians 4:15–17, Saint Paul speaks to those who remain behind: on the one hand, they too will die; on the other, the person who has departed from among them is not lost. Yet many people innocently say, “I lost my loved one,” as though that person were an object. Even an object is not truly lost; matter is not destroyed, but changes form. Paul also reminds them: “For this we say to you by the word of the Lord”—not on our own authority.

He says “we,” including himself, because he could not determine the day of judgment, the day of Christ’s coming. The Jehovah’s Witnesses have fixed that date some fifteen times, but every time they have been put to shame.

Paul was already awaiting it then. And what does he tell us? He does not say, “You—it will happen in your days.” No. He says, “We who are alive and remain until the Second Coming of the Lord shall by no means precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven”—from the place to which He ascended—“with a cry of command, with the voice of an Archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ will rise first.”

Then, “we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.” For at His coming—at the moment described here as His “coming again in glory”—there will also be people still alive.

There will not only be those who have fallen asleep and will rise; there will also be the living. The living will be changed “in the twinkling of an eye,” as swiftly as the human eye can blink. They will receive the resurrected flesh that the dead will also receive, and they will go to meet the Lord.

This is what our Scriptures say. Now I have before me the first passage from the Apocalypse that I mentioned, and I shall read it to you. It is from chapter one, verse 7. John speaks as though he were already seeing Him: “Behold, He is coming with the clouds.”

“And every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him.” Even the Jews who handed Him over there will see Him. “And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him.” The passage also relates other beautiful things.

These words are very powerful. In Matthew 24:30 we read: “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear”—the Precious Cross, which both Protestants and Jehovah’s Witnesses reject. It is the sign of the Son of Man, because Christ cannot be understood apart from the Cross.

What do they call it? A murder weapon? Did the wood itself kill Him? He was killed upon the wood. Grammatically speaking, the Jews would then be innocent: the wood did not kill Him; He was killed upon the wood. Can we be so blind that we fail to see this?

“Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.” But was Christ accursed? Christ was raised up as though He were a criminal, though He was no criminal—is that not so? And what was the bronze serpent that Moses lifted up in the wilderness? Was it truly a serpent? It had the appearance of a serpent, but did it have venom? No. It was a type of Christ.

He appeared as a criminal, and they declared Him a criminal. He appeared as a thief, and they declared Him a thief.

You must have simplicity of heart. Does John not say in the seventh chapter that “the Holy Spirit was not yet given”? Why? Because Christ had not yet been glorified—that is, He had not yet been crucified. What is Christ’s throne? The Cross.

There lies the whole mystery; Satan is behind it. But because he does not want to hear anything at all about either the Cross or the Crucified One, he has cast both aside. He has made Christ a created being, and he has rejected the Cross as an instrument of murder, thinking that this settles the matter.

But matters are not settled, however much we may wish them to be. Here it says that the Precious Cross will once again appear: “Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”

Matthew, chapter twenty-four. “For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the Second Coming of the Son of Man.” Do you expect us to be given advance warning? It will be like the days of Noah: the flood came and swept everyone away. It will be like a trap that suddenly falls and catches an unsuspecting bird feeding beneath it. The coming of Christ will overtake us in exactly this way. No one should expect to be warned beforehand.

It is drawing near. I have said before that people have claimed many times that it was near. Yet, generally speaking, it is drawing near, as it seems. As the divine John Chrysostom says, when you see the plaster beginning to fall from a house, expect the roof to fall as well.

So, when we see the degradation of the human person today; when we see that we can no longer distinguish male from female; when we see the spirit being devalued and the flesh being overvalued—all this confusion—know that no one can resolve these things except His coming.

We are approaching the end. When will that end be? In a thousand years, two thousand years, five thousand years? I do not know. Yet we are moving toward the neck of the bottle, toward that narrowing point. When it will be, I do not know. My concern is not to learn when it will happen, but where I will stand when it does. He knows what state I will be in. That is what concerns me: how I will be found. Besides, many of us will not live to see it, because I myself may not live to see tomorrow morning—and the same is true of every one of us.

So my concern is not how the Second Coming will take place. My concern is this: what state will I be in, whether at the Second Coming or at my own meeting with Christ? For we will meet Christ in one of two ways.

Either we will go to Him through death, or He will come in great glory. We do not know which of the two it will be. But in either case, what matters is that I be ready at every moment, with my ticket in hand—signed, sealed with the blood of Christ, and fully in order.

And by His grace, may I be able to say to Him, “Behold, here I am.” Or, as John said, “Come, Lord Jesus. I am ready.” May I be able to say, “Behold, here I am, by Your grace.” This is what truly matters for every human being.

But instead of attending to this, we fail to put our own lives in order.

We struggle over outward matters, trying somehow to explain when God will come and what will happen in society, in politics, and who knows what else. These are not the real issues. The issue is the condition of my own soul. Christ will not question me about outward affairs or anything else. He will question me about myself. He will single me out and hang me by the foot, as a butcher hangs a lamb by one leg, examines it, cuts it up, and does with it whatever he wishes. This is the issue, the serious matter that ought to concern every person.

So what is said here is that He is coming again in glory. We must certainly await Him, and each person must prepare for that reality. At this very moment, as I speak, both you and I are journeying toward our meeting with Jesus.

Surely no one is so deluded or self-deceived as to say that this meeting may not be drawing near.

We are journeying toward our meeting with Jesus. When we meet Christ, if it is through death, we will undergo the particular judgment. If it is at the Second Coming, we will undergo the universal judgment. If any rational person places his hand over his heart, he will hear it moving.

He will hear it going on: tick-tock, tick-tock. “I am moving onward; you do not know it, but I am carrying you toward the grave.” And it continues. Whatever I have already said belongs to the past, and whatever remains for me to say belongs to the future.

There is scarcely anything we can call the present. Pay attention to this detail, because we are naïve about it: the present does not truly remain. Whatever I have said is already in the past, and whatever I am about to say lies in the future. The present stands upon the edge of an invisible blade. A person cannot possess or experience the present in its entirety.

Think about it. Paul says to the Philippians: “Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead.”

I forget what I have done and look ahead to see where I am going. That is the reality. The power could suddenly go out—and I could stop here, be carried away, and never rise again. It can happen. Where, then, is the present? There is no lasting present.

That is why this is a matter of fear and trembling. A person who persists in sin and neglects his soul does not have seconds to spare—not even fractions of a second. If he had a stopwatch before him, he should put his life in order as quickly as possible, because he does not know when the end will come.

Both death and the coming of Christ are appointed for an unexpected hour. A rational person, who does not know when, must make himself secure. You know that even by human standards people are considered sensible because they invest their money in property, foreign currency, or something of that sort.

...property that may be destroyed by fire or by some unforeseen event. People are considered sensible for insuring against something that may never happen. But this will most certainly happen, and yet a person does not insure himself against it. He does not make himself secure. To safeguard anything else requires money, sweat, and toil. But to secure one’s soul after death requires a willing and eager heart.

Yet a person leaves his anxieties and sins unresolved. Where is the reason in that? Where is human superiority? Is it in the fact that man leapt out of the sea like a sardine and made it all the way to the moon? You will return here: “You are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Here is where you will face it. Do not deceive yourself. A person needs reason—sound reason—and must become afraid. Afraid of what? Could we not hear the Archangel’s commanding cry at this very hour? Has anyone signed a contract with God concerning the hour of Christ’s coming, or the hour of our own departure to meet Him, as we were saying?

So where is reason? Where is education? Where is progress? What kind of way of life is this? But Christ our God gives us a beautiful little exhortation. Speaking about this very thought, He says:

“Remember the dread and fearful day when we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ and give an account of what we have done. Before the eyes of everyone, our sins will be brought forth and revealed, and those who knew nothing of them will see them.” They too will see what sort of people they had beside them—people whom they regarded as Saints.

Everything will always be naked and laid open; the books of our hearts will be opened, and before all will be read both what is manifest and what is hidden, what was done by night and by day. Remember, then, that dread day—he calls it dread—the day of Judgment. Therefore, when the Church reminds us that He is always coming, let us not postpone it to some distant time. It may be now. And let us not assume that we shall still be alive when the last day comes. I myself may go first and meet it; in a certain sense, I may depart from this world. Can a person not depart at any moment, as you read every day in the newspapers and see around you, even among us? How many people are gone each day? Do people not depart from among us? Why should it be the person beside me and not me? The devil deceives me when I attend another person’s funeral, memorial services, and kollyva, as though death concerned only them.

Then a person will truly be rational; then he will be secure. This teaching, therefore, is both moral and dogmatic. He shall come to judge the living and the dead, and His Kingdom shall have no end.

A little earlier, in the flow of my words, I mentioned the partial judgment and the universal Judgment. What is the partial judgment, and what is the universal Judgment? The partial judgment is the one presented in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus.

When this earthly life ended for the one and for the other, a separation took place. One went to the bosom of Abraham, while the other went to Hades. Lazarus was comforted while the rich man suffered; the rich man was in torment while Lazarus rested. This is the partial judgment.

Before Christ, this did not exist. Everyone went to the same place and experienced the same state. Abraham himself was in Hades, in that one realm. After Christ, things changed, and the thief was the first to enter.

The Orthodox Church portrays this beautifully in the image I mentioned to you—the icon of the Judgment in the narthex. It shows a closed gate with a cherub guarding it. This is the gate of Paradise.

Within Paradise, however, it depicts Abraham with a multitude gathered in his bosom. To his right stands the Most Holy Theotokos, and to his left is a man bearing a cross and wearing a halo. This is the thief, who was the first to enter Paradise.

Outside the gate stands Peter with the keys in his hand, and beside him is a whole host of radiant people with halos—the Saints who believed. These keys are repentance and the forgiveness of sins in this world, because Christ did not take the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven away with Him.

I do not know whether you have noticed this. “Take these keys,” He tells him, “and you shall bind and loose. You shall forgive and retain. It will be in your hands whether you open Paradise and pass through, or remain outside.”

For there are two keys: one is repentance, and the other is refusal to repent. It is as though there were a spiritual key with two faces. With one side, a person opens Paradise for himself through metanoia, repentance, and confession. The other opens Hell, because he refuses to make use of repentance and confession and remains unrepentant.

Christ left these here on earth. That is why Peter is shown outside the gate. In the person of Peter we see the Apostles, the Church, and the Mystery of repentance and confession—an institution that helps a person enter Paradise by this path.

The first person to enter there was the thief.

But this takes place after Christ; before that, no one was there. Christ was the One who opened the way to the tree of life. As we read during Great Lent, the flaming sword no longer guards the way.

The cherub withdrew, because Christ came and opened the way. The first man He led into Paradise was the thief. The partial judgment, then, takes place immediately. As soon as a person dies—falls asleep—there is a separation. He will enter one of two states: either a foretaste of Hell or a foretaste of salvation. Yet this is not the final stage.

A person will be judged at the universal Judgment, as Paul says: “God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us,” as it says in the eleventh chapter of Hebrews. The final consummation is the great day that God has appointed, when He will render to each person according to what he deserves. The one who is saved knows that he has been saved, that he has passed, so to speak; but he does not yet know the full measure of his reward. The other knows that he has been condemned, but he does not yet know the full measure of his condemnation—how much he has lost.

The Church helps people through her own people. When someone departs from our home, we begin counting only those who are still seated around our table.

“He is no longer part of the family.” For most of us, there is no greater delusion and no greater blasphemy than this. The family is never dissolved. The departed person remains a member of the family. Suppose someone is confined to his room, sent to prison for one reason or another, or leaves your home and is unable to move or do anything to help himself. Has he ceased to be a member of your family? I think not. Then how can you simply write him off?

You are called to consider how you should conduct yourself and what you should do—or rather, what you would want others to do for you if you were in prison. Do the same for the departed. But we have confined this support for the departed to certain appointed days, if we offer any support at all.

He has not ceased to be a member of the family. John Chrysostom, wishing to console a father, says to him, “So, have you ceased to be a father because Christ has taken your child?”

You are still a father; you are still the father of that child. He is now in the spirit, while you are in the flesh. And tomorrow you too will be in the spirit. People are not lost. After all, Christ has authority over both the dead and the living. And what is symbolized when we chant the Doxology and the great chandeliers are lit at that moment? What does the great chandelier, suspended beneath the image of the Pantocrator, symbolize?

It symbolizes the Church triumphant and the Church militant, both belonging to the one God. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace”: those above and those below all glorify the one God. This truly happens, though we do not understand it and cannot see it.

The interval between a person’s falling asleep and the Second Coming is a period that the Orthodox Church makes use of for the benefit of both the departed and the living. Someone may ask, “And how will I benefit?” You will receive the reward of your love. Many times you may hold a memorial service, give alms, or do something for a soul, yet that soul may not be in a condition to receive it. It will be returned to you, as it were, undelivered. Even so, you will receive your reward.

It is as Saint John Chrysostom says: “If all of you listen, I shall have my reward. If only half listen, I shall still have it. If only ten listen, I shall still have it. If only one listens…”

The very same thing happens here, when a person, moved by love, does something for one of his own people, for anyone else at all, or even for his enemy—something that the departed person can no longer do for himself. He does it, of course, out of love.

Indeed, when those who are unrelated do this for strangers, they receive a greater reward. If I do something for my father, natural affection is involved. If I do something for my son, my wife, or my brother, natural affection is involved.

But if I do something for my neighbor, for my enemy, or for someone else, then love is at work. The One who alone is Love sees these things and rewards each person accordingly. How much we lose! “But I have no one—no one at all.” Really? Have you had no teachers?

Have you no godfather who has departed this life, no spiritual father, who is greater than a father according to the flesh? Do you truly have no one whose name you can write down, for whom you can bring a prosphoron or give two drachmas on behalf of the departed members of your family? And if you bring nothing for others, is there really no one?

Those souls who have left people behind to do these things for them receive great benefit. God’s love did not wish to deprive them of this; He desired to help them even there. Of course, it is better for me to depart without expecting such help—to be in such a spiritual condition that I do not need to wait for it.

But if I depart in some other way—through an unexpected summons or call, through a sudden death, or through some such event—

Just as so many people have departed from this life, or through whatever else may happen in the world, will I not also depart with sins? Who lives and does not sin? Who does not drink iniquity like water? Who can live even one day without sinning, as the much-suffering Job says? Who can? Do we not need this help ourselves? We certainly do, and we must labor for it. If, as I say, we too depart from here with sins, then others must help us as well.

then may others help us. Blessed are those who think in this way. Saint John Chrysostom says that it is good for the lantern to go in front; but often, he says, it may also follow behind, giving light so that people can walk.

So it is with memorial services, with almsgiving, with the forty consecutive Divine Liturgies, and with the Divine Liturgies offered on behalf of the departed. We need to learn precisely how this matter stands and pass this knowledge on to others as an inheritance.

For we shall understand the value and weight of what I am discussing now only when we have passed beyond the grave and no one comes to offer us even a drop of refreshment for our hand or our tongue. Then we shall understand the harm we have done, but it will be too late.

Το πιστεύει όμως ο άνθρωπος σήμερα, έστω και ο πιστός; Δεν λέω για τον άπιστο, που δεν έχει πού ο άνθρωπος να πατήσει και να στηριχτεί. Ο πιστός το πιστεύει ότι θα συναντήσει τον Χριστό εκεί και θα πάει σε ένα μέρος καλύτερο από ό,τι είναι εδώ;

Διότι, αν ο κόσμος τούτος διοικείται από τον άρχοντα του κόσμου τούτου, φυσικό να είναι άσχημα εδώ. Αν ο κόσμος εκείνος διοικείται από τον άρχοντα του κόσμου εκείνου, που είναι ο Χριστός, δεν θα είναι καλά;

Ωραία, εγώ πήγα να σου ετοιμάσω. Δεν θα σου έχω φτιάξει καλά; Δεν μου έχεις εμπιστοσύνη εμένα; Σε ποιον ενδιάφητη περίπτωση θα είσαι εμπιστοσύνη. Και τι θα γίνει με σένα επιτέλους; Θα μείνεις εκεί κάτω;

Και λέγει ο Ιωάννης: «Ναί, ἔρχου, Κύριε Ἰησοῦ, έλα, σε περιμένω». Δεν το θέλουμε, εμείς δεν το θέλουμε. Έχετε διαβάσει ποτέ σας εκείνο το ωραίο που έγραψε και είπε ο Άγιος Ιγνάτιος ο Θεοφόρος, όταν τον πήγαιναν στη Ρώμη, που ορισμένοι έτρεξαν μπροστά να προλάβουν τα θηρία αυτά της Ρώμης, να μην τον φονεύσουν τον άνθρωπο, να μην τον πετάξουν εκεί και λοιπά;

Αγωνίες, αμαρτίες, και ο άνθρωπος δεν τις λύνει. Πού είναι η λογική, πού είναι η ανωτερότητα; Το ότι πήδησε, βγήκε από τη θάλασσα έξω σαν τους γαύρους, πήδησε και πήγε στη Σελήνη; Εδώ θα ξανάρθεις, χοῦς εἶ καὶ εἰς χοῦν ἀπελεύσει, εδώ θα συναντήσεις. Μην πλανάσαι. Χρειάζεται λογική, ορθή λογική, να φοβηθεί ο άνθρωπος. Τι; Πως είναι αυτή την ώρα; Αποκλείεται αυτή την ώρα να ακούσουμε το κέλευσμα αυτού του Αρχαγγέλου να χτυπήσει; Ή έχει κανείς υπογράψει συμβόλαιο με τον Θεόν, την ώρα του ερχομού ή την ώρα του πηγαιμού, όπως τα λέγαμε, ημών προς Αυτόν;

δεν αποτελεί πλέον οικογένεια. Για εμάς τους περισσότερους δεν υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη πλάνη και μεγαλύτερη βλασφημία. Ουδέποτε διαλύεται η οικογένεια. Είναι μέλος της οικογένειας. Αδιάφορο αν είναι κλεισμένος στο δωμάτιο, μπει στη φυλακή για τον α ή β λόγο, φύγει από το σπίτι σου, ο οποίος δεν μπορεί να κινηθεί, να βοηθήσει τίποτα τον εαυτό του. Έπαυσε να αποτελεί μέλος της οικογένειάς σου; Νομίζω όχι. Πώς αυτόν τον ξεγράφεις;

Πατήρ, είσαι πατήρ του παιδιού αυτού. Αυτός είναι εν πνεύματι και εσύ είσαι εν σαρκί. Και εσύ αύριο θα γίνεις εν πνεύματι. Δε χάνονται οι άνθρωποι. Άλλωστε ο Χριστός είναι ο και νεκρών και ζώντων την εξουσίαν έχων. Τι, άλλωστε, συμβολίζει όταν λέμε τη δοξολογία και ανάπτονται οι πολυέλεοι την ώρα εκείνη; Τι ο πολυέλαιος, ο οποίος κρατιέται απ' τον Παντοκράτορα, τι συμβολίζει;

Αλλά κάνω κάτι για τον γειτονά μου, κάτι για τον εχθρό μου, κάτι για κάποιον άλλον, είναι αγάπη στη μέση. Αυτά τα βλέπει η μοναδική αγάπη και αμύγει, κατά αναλογία μου, έναν έκαστον. Πόσα χάνουμε εμείς. Δεν έχω κανέναν εγώ, κανέναν, ε; Δεν έχεις διδασκάλους, ε;

Δεν έχεις νονό να, που έφυγε από εδώ, πνευματικό πατέρα ανώτερο του σαρκικού; Δεν έχεις κανέναν εσύ να γράψεις, να πας ένα πρόσφορο, να δώσεις δύο δραχμές υπέρ των κεκοιμημένων από την οικογένειά σου; Αν δεν φέρεις από τις άλλες, δεν υπάρχει;
